The Ciliwung river, considered one of the most polluted in the world, runs through the Indonesian capital. Its waters mix industrial and agricultural discharge with domestic waste from a city that lacks a modern sewage system. Lack of access to clean water is one of the main problems for most of the 11 million inhabitants of this megacity. In order to obtain clean water, part of the population is irregularly exploiting underground aquifers, which seriously affects the ground and is accelerating the sinking of the city. In the last ten years, parts of the northern area of the city, located on the shores of the Java Sea, have sunk by as much as 2.5 metres.
Indonesian authorities admit that 95 percent of the archipelago’s rivers are polluted in some way. In 60% of the cases, pollution is severe, with toxic waste from industry—combined with domestic, agricultural and livestock waste.
