These two images captured February 22, 2026 and June 26, 2026 show the impact of two strong earthquakes on the parish of Catia La Mar, in La Guaira state, on the north coast of Venezuela.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

Venezuela declared<\/a> a state of emergency following the earthquakes, which measured 7.1 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, occurring less than a minute apart and with their epicenter near Mor\u00f3n, in Carabobo state, on 24 June 2026.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

The confirmed<\/a> death toll stands at 3,685, although it is feared that the final figure will be significantly higher. More than 16,700 people were injured<\/a> in the earthquakes, and some 6,400 have been rescued so far.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

The tremors were felt in the north-central part of the country, including the city of Caracas, with the northern state of La Guaira being the worst affected. The Government says 302 seismic events have been recorded on top of the earthquakes, which have been described<\/a> as the most unusual recorded on the planet in the last thousand years.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

In addition to the casualties, the earthquakes caused extensive structural damage and power cuts. Satellite imagery from Planet Labs and Vantor show apartment blocks in the port of Catia La Mar, La Guaira, before and after they were brought down by the earthquakes.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

Fourteen camps for displaced people have been set up in La Guaira alone. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n
